Camagüey City
General Information
The city of Camagüey it’s located in the geographical center of the province and 535 km east of Havana, it’s also known as the "City of Tinajones". From the colonial period it was always among the most important cities of the island, without doubt, also among the most beautiful. Walking through the streets of the old stately villa one can appreciate true architectural wonders of fine baroque, mainly churches and its historic center being a labyrinth of narrow streets and small squares. Also it’s considered the largest and best preserved of the island. It was designated a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. Camagüey is the birthplace of National Poet of Cuba, Nicolas Guillen, and home to the world famous Ballet of Camagüey. It is also the birthplace of Ignacio Agramonte, hero of the first independence war; the eminent scientist Carlos J. Finlay, and poets Gertrudis Gómez de Avellaneda and Aurelia Castillo.
