Fortaleza San Pedro de la Roca

Description

The fortress is made up of a series of fortifications, built with the aim of protecting the important port of Santiago. This intricate complex of forts, magazines, bastions and batteries, is considered a jewel of military architecture in the Caribbean. It has a high artistic value due to the conception of its design and location, it has great authenticity and originality. It was included in the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1997.

Cementerio Santa Ifigenia

Description

This cemetery was inaugurated in February 1868. It was the 3rd cemetery officially used in Cuba, much of the past and present history of this Caribbean city is found in its tombs. The site is a National Monument since 1979, because of the rich historical, architectural and cultural arsenal that it treasures. Names of men closely linked to the history of the struggle for freedom appear in the registers of the necropolis, which makes it a mandatory place of reference for the visitor.

Cuartel Moncada

Description

The Moncada Barracks, known as "Ciudad Escolar 26 de Julio", is now a building dedicated to teaching in Santiago de Cuba. Its history began in 1859, The governor of the eastern part of the island, began the construction of the barracks Reina Mercedes -name given in honor of the wife of King Alfonso XIII under the direction of Manuel de Ciria, Marquis de Villaitre. Initially known as the barracks of the New Presidio, for being destined to serve as a departmental jail.
