Fortaleza San Pedro de la Roca

Museo del Carnaval Santiaguero

Description

It is number 301 of Heredia Street and its rooms are completely dedicated to the history of these popular festivities, different from those that take place in other parts of Cuba, due to the fact that in their origins they mixed Spanish, African and Franco-Haitian influences. This confluence of cultures, imposed a greater dance and rhythmic diversity, the use of costumes and other distinctive elements that make the carnivals of Santiago de Cuba the most spectacular in the country.

Cementerio Santa Ifigenia

Description

This cemetery was inaugurated in February 1868. It was the 3rd cemetery officially used in Cuba, much of the past and present history of this Caribbean city is found in its tombs. The site is a National Monument since 1979, because of the rich historical, architectural and cultural arsenal that it treasures. Names of men closely linked to the history of the struggle for freedom appear in the registers of the necropolis, which makes it a mandatory place of reference for the visitor.

Cuartel Moncada

Description

The Moncada Barracks, known as "Ciudad Escolar 26 de Julio", is now a building dedicated to teaching in Santiago de Cuba. Its history began in 1859, The governor of the eastern part of the island, began the construction of the barracks Reina Mercedes -name given in honor of the wife of King Alfonso XIII under the direction of Manuel de Ciria, Marquis de Villaitre. Initially known as the barracks of the New Presidio, for being destined to serve as a departmental jail.
